News of the Day ... in Perspective12/02/2003Daschle wants to repeal free-market elements of Medicare expansion Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) has already introduced legislation to repeal “flaws” in the giant Medicare expansion. The bill, called the Medicare Preservation and Drug Price Fairness Act (S. 1974), repeals the new Health Savings Account (HSA) provisions and the demonstration projects that would allow private plans to compete with Medicare. It would also allow Medicare to “negotiate” with the pharmaceutical industry for lower drug prices, which is prohibited by language in the current law.
