WHEREAS: health information technology (HIT) is still in development and systems are rapidly changing;
WHEREAS: a physician should be allowed to choose the technologies, whether for clinical or administrative applications, that are best for his practice and patients;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT: AAPS opposes any health information technology system that is not voluntary;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT: any health information system must be patient-centered, market-driven, and have no embedded, direct link to pay-for-performance.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED THAT: Participation in a government program should not be contingent upon the use of electronic health information technology.
