Doctors Promote Health Care Freedom at Southern California Town Hall

COSTA MESA, Calif., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Physicians and concerned citizens from across Southern California will participate in a Doctors Town Hall from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 14, 2011 at the Costa Mesa Hilton (3050 Bristol Street) to discuss why restoring free markets to U.S. medical care will result in higher quality, lower costs, and happier, healthier patients.

“Both patients and doctors are unsatisfied with the current state of the health care system, and capitalism is frequently and erroneously blamed for this so-called ‘market failure,'” says Town Hall organizer and Newport Beach ophthalmologist, Art Astorino, M.D. “In reality, a true free market in medicine has not existed for more than 50 years. History has proven time and again that capitalism improves quality and lowers prices while socialized schemes fail. Health care is no exception. In addition, increased freedom is the moral solution.”

Truman’s wage controls leading to employer-controlled health insurance, Nixon’s subsidies creating HMOs, and now ObamaCare, are just a few examples of big government and corporate special interests collaborating to interfere with the patient-doctor relationship and thwart capitalist principles, resulting in decreased quality and increased cost.

The Doctors Town Hall will focus on explaining these underlying economic issues as well as identifying the solutions to restore the long-missing free-market mechanisms and repair the patient-doctor relationship.

In addition to Dr. Astorino, the event will feature other Southern California physician leaders and nationally-recognized experts in health care policy.

Sally Pipes, President of the San Francisco-based Pacific Research Institute and bestselling author, will summarize The Truth about ObamaCare. Ayn Rand Institute President Yaron Brook, Ph.D., of Irvine, Calif., will explain why government-run health care is immoral. Fountain Valley physician Cristina Rizza, M.D., will recount her first-hand experience with the failure of government-controlled medicine in Europe. Jeffrey Singer, M.D., from the US Health Freedom Coalition, will highlight the success of health care freedom legislation across the country. Doctors Tea Party co-founder and San Diego physician, Wayne Iverson, M.D., will give an overview of physician-led efforts to repeal ObamaCare. Long Beach physician Marcy Zwelling, M.D. will discuss practical steps doctors can take to work for their patients and not the government or insurance companies.

This event is open to the public at no charge; however, an RSVP is appreciated. The feedback and questions of physician and concerned citizen participants will be a key element of the town hall. More details and registration are available at www.DoctorsTownHall.com.

The Doctors Town Hall is sponsored by the Americans for Free Choice in Medicine (www.afcm.org) and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (www.aapsonline.org).
