This week’s health policy news roundup curated by Jane M. Orient, M.D.
Those who chose a Health Savings Account (HSA) will probably find it regulated out of existence in the 500-page rule for standardized health plans. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/433639/health-savings-accounts-obamacare-affordable-care-act-killing-hsa
State and federal taxpayers are big losers because of 16 million more Medicaid recipients. CBO estimates that $64 billion, almost one quarter of the $279 billion the federal government will spend on Medicaid and SCHIP this year, is due to ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion, reports John Graham (Forbes 3/30/16). http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2016/03/30/obamacares-uninsured-up-5-million-medicaid-dependents-up-16-million-since-2010-estimate/#57450b362d90
Workers are losers when employers pull the plug on their health plans. Between 4 million and 9 million fewer people are projected to have employment-based coverage each year from 2017 through 2026 than would have had such coverage if the ACA had never been enacted, according to the CBO. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/03/28/obamacare-may-force-employers-to-pull-plug-on-millions-health-plans-cbo-report-finds.html?mc_cid=5fb867fa45&mc_eid=cfafdebde6
Workers lose again when they are forced to bear the cost of the “Millennial mandate.” They lose benefits and/or wage increases—and tend to blame their employer rather than ObamaCare. Michael Cannon says this mandate to include dependents on their parents’ health coverage until age 26 may be the “perfect crime” (Forbes 3/238/16). http://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelcannon/2016/03/28/the-evil-genius-of-obamacares-millennial-mandate/#39dd7f8f1c48
Illegal aliens, who were supposed to be excluded from the Affordable Care Act (ACA), are big winners. They don’t get federally subsidized care directly, but “because of Obamacare, more taxpayer resources at the state and local level are being spent on health care of illegal immigrants than would have been spent otherwise,” explains Chris Conover (Forbes 3/25/16). This is because every $1 dollar reduction in taxpayer-financed uncompensated care costs for the uninsured frees up a dollar that can be spent on health care for illegal immigrants. http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2016/03/25/because-of-federal-health-law-illegal-immigrants-get-care
