Sebelius on HealthCare.gov: media roundup for 10/23/2013

Compiled and summarized for AAPS members by The Market Institute.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sat down with CNN correpsondent Sanjay Gupta for an interview about the Healthcare.gov website.

In response to questioning, Sebelius said:

  • The problems with the website are due to high volume
  • Possibly delaying a broken website was not an option; the government creating a new health insurance market was too important for the people that need it
  • When asked if the website forced a user to sign up before being actually able to see health insurance premium prices, the Secretary responded “I don’t know about that”
  • The site is not working the way her or the President would like it to
The President did not know about any concern with the website having problems before the exchange opened on October 1st

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is calling on HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to testify on the Affordable Care Act. Repeated attempts have been made by Ryan and the House Budget Committee to gather information about the readiness of Obamacare, but those attempts were not responded to (Politico).

Politico argues that Kathleen Sebelius would not be hard to replace, but the Obama Administration would be reluctant to do so because of the ensuing confirmation battle in Congress (Politico).

HHS announced there are plans for Secretary Sebelius to testify in front of Congress, specifically the Energy and Commerce Committee, as soon as next week (Washington Post).
