Health Watch: Should You Get Another COVID Shot?

Updated COVID vaccine is now available, and “CDC recommends it for most adults ages 18 and older.” And “parents of children ages 6 months to 17 years should discuss the benefits of vaccination with a healthcare provider.”

Reportedly, “the CDC’s new COVID vaccine guidance no longer recommends the shot for healthy children and pregnant women,” although the CDC website seems confusing on this point. Many medical officials and academics find this small retreat “problematic,” maintaining that “medical and public health experts consider the COVID vaccine extremely safe, both for children and expectant mothers.” And parents are advised to discuss the benefits of the shot for their baby with their healthcare provider, not any possible risk.

On the other hand, unofficial sources point to “safety signals” about the shots and even call for banning mRNA technology. Which of the polarized sides is correct?

The graph shows an uptick in all-cause mortality for each added dose.

The lowest line shows a slow steady increase in the cumulative number of deaths in the unvaccinated population in Koganei, is a city in Tokyo Metropolis, Japan, with 120,000 residents, which keeps meticulous vaccination records. The green line shows cumulative deaths in the vaccinated population. This might simply show that older and sicker people with a higher death rate were more likely to get vaccinated. However, there is a perceptible increase in the slope of the line for each added dose.

This kind of dose-response pattern is considered one of the strongest forms of epidemiological evidence for a causal relationship between an exposure and harm. Unfortunately, data like this are hard to find. Fortunately, most mandates are gone, so patients can decide for themselves—but whom should they trust?
